Mixed Martial Arts Promotion “UnCivil War™” Sponsors Summer Camp for Troubled Teens in Greene County.

On May 21st 2011 Mixed Martial Arts Fighters converged on The Clarion Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield Missouri for an evening of competition most commonly known as ‘cagefighting’. UnCivil War™ Fight Promoter Eric Stevens prefers to call it a Mixed Martial Arts Competition due to the high level of training most of the participants have in fighting arts such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Wrestling, American Boxing and other relevant combat styles. “Anyone, trained or untrained can be a ‘cagefighter’ but it takes dedication and a high level of commitment to be a true Mixed Martial Artist” says Stevens.

Stevens organized the UnCivil War™ fight night as a charity benefit to help troubled teens in the Greene County area. Stevens, a former troubled teen believes that teens in trouble often rebel against authority figures such as parents, teachers and other adult figures in leadership roles. Stevens reports that he has had several troubled teens enroll in Mixed Martial Arts training (also called MMA) at his Springfield based Mixed Martial Arts school ‘Team Fusion’ Jiu-Jitsu & MMA.

Stevens noticed that the troubled teens who would ordinarily rebel in a training or classroom environment were very cooperative when interacting with other students during MMA training sessions at the gym. Also observed was the high level of respect the teens had for members of the fight team. Stevens explains that not all students at Team Fusion are ‘fighters’ but that many of them participate in the training just to stay in shape. Team Fusion boasts one of the largest stables of active Mixed Martial Arts fighters in the Southwest Missouri area. “The troubled teens that participate in our training programs listen to and look up to the members of our fight team. It gives our fight team the ability to be a positive influence on these kids. Due to the high level of commitment to training involved with MMA our fight team is an excellent source of role models for these troubled teens”, says Stevens.

Through a network of referrals generated by a student of Team Fusion Stevens was able to connect with Greene County Juvenile Probation Officer Collin Strand to make the program accessible to troubled teens that have already broken the law and found themselves on probation. Stevens says he wants to help the youth that need it most.

Proceeds from the first UnCivil War™ have been designated for two purposes. The first is a training scholarship for one teen to receive Mixed Martial Arts training at Team Fusion Jiu-Jitsu & MMA at no cost to the teens family. Teens will compete in an essay competition to be considered for selection to the program. Stevens says that many of these troubled teens come from families that do not have the financial resources to pay for gym memberships, martial arts training or other extra curricular activities. The first goal of the program is to make Mixed Martial Arts training available to these teens in the Greene County area regardless of their ability to pay.

The second purpose designated for the proceeds is a Summer Camp that has been established and made available free of charge to the entire Juvenile probation department. Juvenile Probation Officer Collin Strand will be in charge of selecting attendees to the Summer Camp that will take place on June, July and August dates. The location and dates have not been released due to privacy requirements for minor offenders.

Stevens says that UnCivil War™ will continue to benefit this cause. Plans are underway for UnCivil War™ II at the same location as the first UnCivil War™ held at The Clarion Hotel and Convention Center. The event is scheduled for July 9th and Stevens says he would like to see a great turnout to this event to support the troubled teens of the Greene County area as well as your favorite local fight teams as they display their skills in competition or as most like to call it “Cagefighting”.

Springfield’s Original Home Town Fight Team Set To Compete at “UnCivil War”

Springfield Fight Club’s Ryan Smith, Cody Cummings and Chris Reed set to fight at “UnCivil War” May 21st in Springfield, Missouri.

Springfield Missouri’s original hometown fight team “Springfield Fight Club” has agreed to bring three fighters to compete at the upcoming “UnCivil War” Cagefights. The event which features Mixed Martial Artists from around the region competing in “no holds barred” fighting competition is set to take place on May 21st at Club Vegas Casino Lounge.

Springfield Fight Club Fighters Ryan Smith, Chris Reed and Cody Cummings are on the fight card. In a recent interview Cody Cummings said the team has been training hard and is ready to put on a great show for its Springfield fans. Cody says he want to be “smart but aggressive” and display a well-rounded fighting style.

Cody is originally from Kansas City but resides in Springfield to attend Missouri State University. Also on the Card are fellow Missouri State students Matt Bremerkamp, Gunnar Denney and Keaton Trager. The trio from MSU trains at Team Fusion Jiu-Jitsu & MMA.

This fight card is expected to be one of the most dynamic cards Springfield has seen in quite sometime. Team Fusion owner Eric Stevens who is admittedly a big Springfield Fight Club fan said he remembers years ago when the MMA shows in the area always had a half-dozen or so fighters from Springfield Fight Club and looks forward to seeing them at the event.
